Consultations and Programs: Theoretical Approach
As a licensed psychologist, former secondary school teacher, expert group facilitator and parent of school age children, Dr. Bryan uses a range of concepts and skills in her consultation with schools. She emphasizes theories of Human Identity Development- of which Gender and Sexuality are essential features- and invites teachers to frame the challenges they face in this domain as educational challenges that require their best pedagogical practices. While there are important political and cultural influences to consider, Dr. Bryan maintains that a school's stated educational mission provides the critical foundation from which to address issues of Gender and Sexuality Diversity.
The Gender and Sexuality Diversity (GSD) construct allows for a broad consideration of the ways individuals express Gender Identity, Gender Expression, Sexual Identity, and Sexual Orientation. These aspects of identity all exist on continuums. Some people fit exclusively at particular points on these continuums; some people are better described by "blends" and "degrees" and non-static positions on a given continuum. Thus GSD represents a wide yet nuanced range of expressions and identities. In addition, the standard construct of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (GLBTQ) is not developmentally appropriate when applied to most school age and many middle school age children. Using the GSD paradigm allows us to consider ongoing Gender Identity Development and Sexual Identity Development- both essential aspects of childhood and adolescent development- without imposing premature descriptors on these emergent processes.

...she is deeply aware of the swirling tides of culture, values, and politics that revolve around these topics. With a deft touch, a sense of humor, a disarming directness, and substantial experience, she is uniquely equipped to help teachers, students, parents, and trustees understand the why and how of discussing gender and orientation in schools. Using a blend of presentation, stories, and role-playing, she provides a framework that allows everyone to join the conversation, feel safe, and learn more. Well—prepared and professional, Dr. Bryan offers a wealth of ideas and resources.
